Crimea, has been a contested territory since the times of antiquity. The ancient Greeks, the Genoese, the Ottomans and now the present day Russians have come to the peninsula for trade, farming and leisure. With its warm climate and unpopulated territories, Crimea became a destination for nomads, seeking ascetic existence away from the routine of an urban life.
